That’s not where it ended, though. I moved back in with Mother, after that night. I never told her what had happened, though I’m not sure she would have understood it if I had. But I think, in some ways, she knew. I caught her looking at me, like I was something damaged or bruised.

The other things didn’t start for a few weeks, and they seemed innocuous at first. I thought it was just jumpiness. The static on the radio seemed more frequent, but then it would be gone and I would be kicking myself for being so flighty.

Sometimes I thought I saw people watching me, but then I would be past them and their gaze unchanged. It must be that there was something behind me.

For a long time, it was easy to brush it off, like that. But it wasn’t like that all the time. My books, which I’d hastily shoved onto the shelf when I’d moved back in, were organized. I had been telling myself I would do it soon for weeks, and now it was done on its own. Mother, I could see, had hardly moved for a week before that. It couldn’t have been her, and I know it wasn’t me.

But even that, I thought, was probably nothing. I mean, I was scared, but at the same time I thought it was only my imagination.

After almost six weeks of this going on and on, repeatedly jumping at my own shadow, I jumped at someone else’s. I didn’t see them the first time, but I saw it out of the corner of my eyes, that people would be standing behind me. When I turned to look, they were gone. The shadows, though, were unmistakable.

I was too afraid to go out at night, then. I’d stock up on soda and juice so that I would never need to leave after the sun went down. As the weather started to cool, I knew, it was only going to get worse. The nights would be earlier and earlier until I would consider going out for lunch, and maybe pick up something at the store, and that would be it.

I knew, in my heart, that if I were ever caught in the darkness, without the shadows there to warn me—whoever it was, they would be there, and they would have me. I felt like a child who, afraid of the boogeyman in her closet, had checked and found a candy wrapper she hadn’t eaten. That’s honestly the fear that I had, and it never went away.

It had been a month since I’d slept all the way through the night. I kept waking, imagining I heard the sound of footsteps. I know that my dog would have barked up a storm if there were an intruder. He’s always been a little butthead, even when people come in alongside me. But somehow, it never made me feel any better. I always had to get up, pick up
